Hanshan and Shide inscribed their poems on the limbs of trees, rock faces, and walls. Later a collector named Xu Lingfu copied them from these sources and preserved them.

Fewer poems are attributed to Shide than to Hanshan, and they differ both stylistically and in terms of content. Hanshan was not a member of the Buddhist sangha, and some of his poems are critical of both Buddhists and Daoists. Shide’s poetry, on the other hand, has a more distinctly Buddhist flavor.
